Freight forwarders are a company/person that acts as an agent
on behalf of an exporter. Typically when a shipment is being exported
internationally, there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be managed, &
banking terms that need to be dealt with. Freight forwarders assist the
exporter by working with the actual transportation company. They usually
make all the arrangements to have the freight picked up, delivered to the
transportation company warehouse, packaged/prepared for either ocean or air shipping. They are familiar with the shipping process, shipping laws & regulations from the exporting country & they will handle all the necessary paperwork. They will shop around on behalf of the exporter to get the best rates possible & basically make it 'one stop shopping' for the exporter. They don't do all this for free of course, as they will charge for their services. However, the risk of not knowing what you are doing as an exporter & the potential of fines far outweighs this highly valued service that they offer. They know what the heck they are doing & they do it well.
